The weather came through brilliantly as did the staff of Schenley Park GC, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, for the June 10, 2007 gathering of GCS members, friends and local golf enthusiasts.
Bern Bernacki and Jim Senkewitz hosted the 4th (now annual) Hickory Golf Tournament and Antique Golf Collectables Exhibit and Sale. They were joined by GCS members Bob Gettis, (GCS National Secretary), and Len Brown from the Philadelphia area , and board members at large, Lee Crist, Duncansville, Pennsylvaia, and Eric Wolke of New York City, NY. GCS members Emil Gondos and Mike Rothaupt also made the journey from eastern Pennsylvania to support the event.

The competition was organized as an individual card with Calloway scoring, as well as the Two-Man Best Ball Foray, a new and highly popular addition to the event. In all, thirteen golfers recorded scores, and six best ball teams competed. The first place individual trophy was awarded to Kirk Thoma for his 85/net 60. Kurt Vogelsberger was low gross at 76. The first Two-Man Best Ball Foray was won by Team Vogelsberger/Bernacki, with a score of 73. Rich Rizzo was voted Best Dressed.
Schenley Park locals Kirk Thoma, Cory O’Connor and Rich Rizzo entered the event to represent the 1st TEE Pittsburgh adults and played their FIRST hickory competition. Ken Kirby of nearby Murrysville, Pennsylvania also was a first timer with the hickories. "Awesome, interesting, and challenging” were descriptors of their first hickory experience. “A great way to appreciate golf history and the advances in technology.”
All “had fun,” and vowed to return and challenge for the individual and team prizes.
Youth player and 1st TEE participant, Nate Novacco, teamed with GCS mentor Eric Wolke for a blending of youthful exuberance with well seasoned hickory form.
Kurt Vogelsberger, a Pittsburgher who challenged for a US Open birth a week earlier with his “regular stix”, joined the fun as an experienced hickory competitor.
Exhibitors displayed clubs and collectables, highlighted by Lee Crist’s incredible tee collection.. Mary Bernacki hosted an event for spouses at the nearby Phipps Conservatory. Phipps was highlighting the internationally renowned Chihluly glass exhibit with the summer flower show. The gals dressed “in period” and were the talk of the day!
The group later enjoyed a cookout at the Bernacki residence, awarded prizes, and toured the “Bernacki Collection”; but the highlight was Mary’s cooking, the fellowship, and the enlightening antiquity presentations by Bob Gettis and Lee Crist. Special thanks to Bruce Stephen, Kirk Thoma, and Wendy Driscoll of 1st TEE Pittsburgh and the Schenley Park GC staff, all golfers, and supporters !!
