Region Four held its annual trade show and tournament at the historic Onion Creek Country Club in Austin, Texas on March 10 and 11, 2006. We had a great turn out with many participants from outside our region - including golfers from England, Canada, New York, California, Nebraska, Michigan, Wisconsin, Kentucky and Virginia.

Of special note was the attendance of three golfing legends: Johnny Henry, Rives McBee and our guest speaker, Joe Black and his lovely wife Susan. Joe ran the PGA Tour for seven years, is an original member of The PGA Hall of Fame and served for 47 years on the Master’s Rules Committee. He has many more accomplishments than I could ever list here. And, he once penalized Jack Nicklaus for slow play! Despite all his fame, we all agreed that when he married Susan, he definitely married up! Joe spun stories about Arnie, Jack, Ben Hogan and the early tour…what a treat!
Roger Hill, Vice President of the Golf Collectors Society, brought us all up to speed with the latest on our GCS Website and other GCS news. Eric Wolke brought his “tools” and demonstrated his considerable club repair skills.
The course was in great shape as was the golfing. Although a bit windy (gusts to 30 mph) and with record heat, Ross Kenny from Edmonton, Canada, made a side hill snake on the last hole to shoot a fine two day score of 154 to edge out Chuck McMullin by one shot. To Chuck’s credit, he made up four shots on the last day. This was the second win for Ross. In fact we were delighted to have seven previous winners in the field. Chuck did win the 1st Net with a score of 144.
The scramble was won by the team of Eric Wolke, Jim McCombs, Jinx Hoover and Ron Lyons. The longest drives were won by Johnny Henry and Randy Jensen. Johnny attributes his length to his large arms. Closest to the pin winners were Eric Wolke and Chuck McMullin.
We extend a special note of thanks to Pete League, a member of Onion Creek, for his help in setting things up; and my wife Joyce who took care of our house guests and hosted not one, not two, but a three day cocktail party! All in all a good time was had by everyone at this gathering of good friends, good golf and wonderful stories - and we look forward to next year.
