The Region four trade show and hickory tournament was held March 23 and 24, 2007 at the historic Onion Creek Country Club in Austin, Texas. We had a great turnout with some 30 players from all over the United States, Canada and England. The tournament was played over two days followed by the trade show and banquet on Saturday night. |

The Medal Division trophy was hotly contested and won by Randy Jensen with a combined score of 156. Chuck McMullen’s fine 76 on Saturday failed to cause Randy to panic, although he admitted the pressure was on. John Sherwood opened with an 80 - however the tiring process of radio and TV interviews apparently pooped him out in the final round. Willie Ducherer from Edmonton took second. Yours truly won the Handicap Division, followed by Andy Reistetter. The scramble was won by one shot by Ron Lyons, John McMurchy, Susan Black and Rob Howard. Perennial long drive contest winner John Henry was de-throned with Willie Ducherer winning one day and Randy Jensen taking the title the next. Closest to the hole was won by the Australian ringer Rob Howard. Past winners in attendance included, John Henry, Randy, Chuck McMullin and John Sherwood. A special guest player was the University of Texas golf coach for 17 years, Jimmy Clayton. The banquet was highlighted by our guest speaker and GCS member, Jim Apfelbaum, author, past president of the Texas Golf Writers Association and talk show host. Jim had many great golf stories about Harry Vardon and others. Jim was also the recipient of our DAL (Dead Aed Last) Trophy. Once again Onion Creek Country Club provided a perfect setting for our event with Eric Lusk and his golf staff setting the course up for hickory play. The trade show and banquet facilities were first rate thanks to Michele Gioia. |
