Golf course superintendent Bill Barker set up a challenging but fair golf course for the July 21st hickory competition that brought 31 knicker-clad players from six states to this event that features hickory shafted woods and irons, mostly dating from 90 to 100 years ago.
Randy Jensen of Omaha, Nebraska, who is the current National and International Hickory Championship titleholder, held true to form by scoring a 74 over the par 71 layout. In the Open Division the next three players all shot 81, with John Ausen of Urbandale placing 2nd overall and Matt Seam of Omaha and Jeff Wendell of Ames placing 1st and 2nd in the low net category.
Terry Pitts of Bennet, Nebraska and Bill Reed of Des Moines, Iowa both shot 80 to tie for the Senior Title. John Erickson of Clive scored 84 net 62 to win the Senior low net division over Dick Shanahan of Shelby, Nebraska, who had a net 64. In a special division for classic steel clubs of the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s, L.A. “Vern” Smith of Des Moines fashioned a net 73 with his 1950’s Wilson Top-Notch irons over Bob Baldus who had a net 78 using 1940’s Bobby Jones Autograph irons and woods.
Steve Krantz of Johnston, Dave Goss of Panora, Bill Barker of Altoona, and Cal Van Rees of Newton, were all local area winners in the 4-ball events. Chris Shanahan of Shelby, Nebraska, won the Ladies division.
The Walter Hagen 4-Man Scramble Flite winners were Cal Van Rees of Newton, Bill Barker of Altoona, Arch Murphy of Waverly, IA. and Greg Drees of Omaha, NE - with a best shot score of 67.
The Bobby Jones 4-Man Scramble Flite Winners were Harry Mack Horton of Middleton,WI., Steve Krantz of Johnston, Dave Goss of Panora, and Gary Moody of Muscatine, IA with a best shot score of 70.
