Carolina Mountain Hickory Tournament

The Carolina Mountain Hickory Tournament was played at the Country Club of Asheville on June 2 and 3, 2006.  Twenty-eight golfers took part in the event including nine members of the Country Club of Asheville.

The Low Gross division was won by Steven Neuleip from the Country Club of Ashville.  John Gates from Elkton, FL took second place and Dick Overly, also from the Country Club of Ashville captured third.  Joe Rambo from Santee, SC won the Low Net.  Bill Engelson from Pinehurst, NC placed second, and John Modaff from the Country Club of Ashville was third.  Doug Marshall from London, Ontario won closest to the pin at Hole 6, and Bruce Stirling from the Country Club of Ashville won closest to the pin at Hole 13.

A new feature of this event was a seminar titled “Playing with Hickories and How It Can Improve your Game” by the club teaching pro Chris Amys.  His presentation included a comparison of the modern and classic swing, how adapting a classic swing can improve your game, and drills to improve your swing.   Chris did a great job and everyone greatly appreciated this featured event.

The Country Club of Asheville is the oldest country club in North Carolina, dating from 1894.  The course, designed by Donald Ross in 1928, is one of four Ross courses in Asheville.  Others include Grove Park Inn, Biltmore Forest and Asheville Municipal Golf Course.
