Golfing legend Jack Burke will donate papers related to the 1957 founding of the Champions Golf Course and resulting development of the area north of Houston to Rice University.
The papers include correspondence, photographs and other documents. They will be handed over to Lee Pecht, the head of special collections at Rice's Fondren Library, at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 15, 2007. Mr. Burke will be present for the formal donation.
In addition to founding the club, Mr. Burke is an accomplished golfer. He won the Masters Tournament and the PGA Championship in 1956. His partner in developing the Champions course, Jimmy Demaret, also won several major tournaments. This will be the first time papers like these are to be handed over to a university for safe-keeping.
This year is the 50th anniversary of the launching of the Champions Golf Course.
