Golf balls are a very popular collectible. However, in addition to being sold separately, golf balls have always been sold in boxes of three, six or twelve. This of course, requires packaging and many collectors collect golf ball boxes for their own sake. (However, a box of unused, still wrapped golf balls in their original box is considered a great treasure!).
Some of the companies who produced attractive ball boxes include The North British Rubber Co. of Edinburgh, Scotland; the Silvertown Co. of London, England; Slazenger & Sons of New York and London; A.G. Spalding & Bros. of Chicopee, MA; the St. Mungo Manufacturing Co. of Newark, NJ; the Dunlop Tyre & Rubber Co. of Birmingham and New York, and the Worthington Rubber Co. of Elyria, OH.
Golf ball boxes can be found at GCS trade shows, auctions, flea markets and on-line auction sites. Like all collectibles, condition is important.
The photographs of ball boxes shown here are courtesy of GCS member Dick White. Some boxes are replicas.
