Golf Stamps

Postage stamps with golfing themes and images were first issued in the 1950s.  As they are relatively inexpensive, stamps are an item of golf memorabilia that are within the reach of most collectors.  And, since they are small, an extensive collection requires little storage space.

Postage stamps pertaining to golf are often issued to promote tourism or commemorate a special event.  Major tournaments often prompted a series of stamps and at the Open and U.S. Open Championships there were usually booths selling specially-printed envelopes for “first day covers.”

Golfing stamp collectors have their own International Philatelic Golf Society (IPGS) which has over 250 members from more than 20 countries.  A quarterly journal, TEE TIME, was begun in 1987.  Articles are written by members, and cover a wide variety of items related to golf philately.  Once of the most popular features of the journal is a running "catalogue" (checklist) of golf stamps and postal stationary issues, which is updated every issue as new items are produced, and also includes "new" issues from years past which are discovered to include a golf theme.

T
he IPGS also offers a members auction, where items are put up for bid by members, and members bid on the items through the IPGS Auction Manager.  Another feature is a membership directory, listing the names and addresses of all IPGS members, so that members can correspond with each other, exchanging philatelic items and golf philately knowledge.

Stamp dealers and collectors in the United States regularly identify stamps with the reference numbers contained in the Scott Standard Postage Stamp Catalogue.  Referred to simply as Scott’s, this multi-volume catalogue is updated annually and is available at a public library or bookstores.  Some stamps, however, can only be found in the no longer published Minkus catalog.  The British use a numbering system and catalog prepared by Stanley Gibbons.

The U.S. Postal Service has a policy that no citizens other than presidents can appear on stamps until ten years after their death.  Three American golfers have been honored thus far.  They include Bobby Jones (1981), Babe Zaharias (1981) and Francis Ouimet (1988.)

Shown here are a variety of golf postage stamps from many different countries.
